Homeless People are "People"

Dallas Stamper - Wednesday, March 16, 2011
I'm sure you heard about the homeless people being asked to vacate a site in the Seatack section of Virginia Beach. If you haven't here is a link to the story http://www.wavy.com/dpp/news/local_news/homeless-campers-evicted-from-tent-city I've had so many people ask me what they can do, so here is how you can help.
1) First Pray, I believe if everyone in Virginia Beach prayed for the homeless it would make a huge difference.
2) There is not enough shelter for the homeless that is why allot of them live in the woods in the first place. So that leads me to my question. Would you donate to an emergency shelter to house the homeless? PIN wants to build a place for people like the one's getting evicted.
3) My last question for now? If it was your decision would you allow a shelter to be built a mile from your house? I ask the question because I want to know how bad you want to help people who are currently homeless.

Sorry one last question would you change your answer to 2 and 3 above if that homeless person was your child?

US AND THEM

Dallas Stamper - Wednesday, March 09, 2011
Let me start by saying Us and Them are not necessarily dangerous words; however, the can become dangerous depending on how they are used. For example when we refer to a homeless person as THEM and people with houses as US, I think we make a tragic mistake. You see by referring to a homeless person as them you kind of put them in a position where they are somehow different than you. There was a time that I used this type of language when referring to homeless people. but have tried to eliminate "us and them" from my vocabulary

I believe one of the strengths of PIN is eliminating the barriers between people who currently have homes and those who currently don't have homes. It sounds like a small thing, but I believe small things make a huge difference

Dogs are more important than People

Dallas Stamper - Wednesday, February 16, 2011
I don't believe that, but I believe the City of Virginia Beach is saying that. Virginia Beach is building an $11 million dollar animal shelter off of Birdneck Rd. Check out this article from the Pilot http://hamptonroads.com/2010/06/new-virginia-beach-animal-shelter-okd  In the process of building this shelter the city is displacing homeless people who are living in the woods because of a lack of shelter space in our city for homeless people. Let me say I love dogs my family owns 2 dogs that we love them allot, however, I believe we should put a higher value on people. It really makes me mad that we have homeless people living in the woods every night in our city and we are spending $11 million on this animal shelter. Although, I believe the animals need a "clean and healthy environment", I believe people deserve a "clean, healthy, and safe environment". So when are we citizens of Virginia Beach going to get mad enough to build a shelter. The city is building it because of the outcry of pet advocates, so when are we going to have the outcry from people advocates.

Now that is somethng I can say "hallelujah" to.
