Let me start by saying Us and Them are not necessarily dangerous words; however, the can become dangerous depending on how they are used. For example when we refer to a homeless person as THEM and people with houses as US, I think we make a tragic mistake. You see by referring to a homeless person as them you kind of put them in a position where they are somehow different than you. There was a time that I used this type of language when referring to homeless people. but have tried to eliminate "us and them" from my vocabulary

I believe one of the strengths of PIN is eliminating the barriers between people who currently have homes and those who currently don't have homes. It sounds like a small thing, but I believe small things make a huge difference

I wanted to take a minute to let you know about a new book that has been released. It was written by William F. Rountree Jr., but his friends call him "Tree". I am blessed to be able to call him Tree. When I think of who the hero's in the world are today, I think of men like Tree. Tree is a hugely successful business man who has his priorities in the right place. He has been generous to so many charities (PIN being one of those). He is also a man of God who puts his relationship with God above everything else and he's not ashamed to say it. Tree is an amazing man who has alot on his plate, but he still has time to call a Executive Director of a small non-profit for some encouraging words like "keep up the good work".

I just ordered my copy of the book yesterday at www.treethebook.com, and I can't wait till it arrives. It will go right to the top of my reading list.

I'm excited about a new blog series that I'm going to do every Thursday where I give an inside look at jobs within PIN. I'm hoping to give everyone an inside look at what makes PIN tick. We serve up to 250 people on Sunday's providing an Awesome meal catered by Grand Affairs. Our core volunteers James Fisher, Dave Stinson, and Indy Freeman, who do a great job of coordinating volunteers and making sure everyone gets feed and always keeping a smile on their face. We have Churches sign up each week to help serve the meal. In this video the Church helping is Church of the Redeemer

This weekend was alot of fun at PIN. Saturday we had Grace Family Fellowship, and they are quickly becoming one of my favorite Churches. They come out and serve with such a joyful attitude. Their senior pastor Doug Haupt was the first person to show up Saturday. You have to love a church where the senior pastor is the first one out.

Sunday we had a Church of the Redeemer and it was their first Sunday at PIN. When I talked to their senior pastor he told me they were a small church; however. they showed up huge. They had so many volunteers it was Awesome. I wish all churches were as service oriented as Church of the Redeemer is.

On Thursday Virginia Beach was doing the "Point In Time" Count which is basically when the city counts how many homeless people they have. During the count organizations setup tables to show homeless people how they can help them. Most organizations have people that are very passionate about helping homeless people; however, the thing that I love about PIN is that half of the people that were manning our table where former homeless people who are now leaders within PIN. As I was thinking about it I realized that more than half of our core volunteers are people who have been homeless and have gotten help from PIN to get off the street and are now giving back.

If you were in a deep ditch and couldn't get out and there were two people outside the ditch, one with a book called how to get out of the ditch and the second says I was in that ditch yesterday... Who would you listen to.... The book may get me out but I would probable listen to the person that was in the ditch yesterday and got out....

PIN is full of people who are getting out of their ditches.

The 2011 National Championship for Ping Pong is moving from Las Vegas to Virginia Beach in 2011. see link http://www.usatt.org/ceo/ceoblog.shtml This is really exciting news for PIN. Pong Pong for Poverty has became a huge fundraisers for PIN and with the Nationals moving to Virginia Beach it could open lots of opportunities for Ping Pong for Poverty to grow... Dean Johnson who is on the Ping Pong Hall of Fame Board of Directors and was part of the decision to bring the tournament to Virginia Beach is also on the Ping Pong for Poverty Leadership Team.

I believe Ping Pong is going to be huge in helping the homeless in Virginia Beach... Who would have thought that 5 years ago. Definately not me
