Winter Shelter: Community in Action When It Matters Most

Each winter, as temperatures drop, the need for safe, warm shelter becomes urgent for our neighbors experiencing homelessness. PiN Ministry’s Winter Shelter program exists for one simple but powerful reason: to make sure no one in our community has to sleep outside in the cold.

Through Winter Shelter, PiN provides a warm place to sleep, nourishing meals, caring volunteers, and a sense of dignity and belonging for those who need it most. None of this would be possible without the incredible partnership of the City of Virginia Beach, which allows PiN to operate the Winter Shelter on behalf of our homeless neighbors. We are deeply grateful for this collaboration and for the shared commitment to protecting life, health, and human dignity during the harshest months of the year.

But the true heart of Winter Shelter is the churches who open their doors — and their hearts — week after week.

Our 2025–26 season began at Church of the Holy Family, who graciously hosted our guests over Thanksgiving. From there, we moved to Bayside Baptist Church, continuing the mission of hospitality and care.

We were especially excited this year to welcome New Life Church – Kempsville Campus as a first-time host church in Virginia Beach. While we were at New Life, an amazing group of partner churches came together to provide meals for our guests. A huge thank you to:

  • Emmanuel Lutheran Church
  • St. Michael Lutheran Church
  • Forefront Church
  • Church of the Holy Family
  • St. John the Apostle Catholic Church
  • Kings Grant Presbyterian Church
  • Redeemer Presbyterian Church

Your generosity and teamwork made a real difference in the lives of our guests, and we are so thankful for your willingness to step up and serve.

For our fourth week of shelter, Bayside Presbyterian Church welcomed our guests, providing a safe, peaceful space of rest and renewal. We then moved to Kempsville Christian Church, who hosted from Christmas Eve through New Year’s Eve — a powerful reminder that no one should be alone during the holidays. We rang in the New Year together at BayLakes United Methodist Church, closing out the season with hope, warmth, and community.

To every church, volunteer, donor, and partner who played a role this season — thank you. Your faith in action is changing lives. Together, we are proving that when a community comes together, love and compassion can overcome even the coldest nights.
