PiN Recovery Groups, Breaking the Cycle

Addressing Addiction, Healing Trauma, Restoring Hope

At PiN Ministry, we know that homelessness is never caused by just one thing—and there isn’t one simple solution. While housing is important, true transformation requires going deeper. Many who enter housing without addressing challenges like addiction, mental health, or past trauma find themselves back on the streets, carrying the same burdens with them. That’s why PiN takes a Christ-centered, wholistic approach—walking alongside people with compassion, offering essential services, building trust, addressing root causes, and introducing the hope found in Jesus. Our mission is not just to provide shelter, but to see lives restored and people set free.

NO SINGLE CAUSE OF HOMELESSNESS

We know there is not one single thing that causes someone to become homeless and there is not one path out of homelessness. It may seem easy just give someone a place to live and they will no longer be homeless. The problem is when people get housed if they are dealing with mental health or addiction issues, they take those issues into housing with them. What we have seen here at PiN is that when people have addiction issues that aren’t addressed, they will lose their housing and become homeless again. Then the cycle begins again. The problem is that every time someone gets housed and fails because of substance abuse it makes it harder the next time because they feel like a failure. PiN wants to help people to be set free from the bondage of addiction

That is why PiN is serious about helping people who are dealing with addictions. When working with people who have addictions you must build trust to allow the person to understand that you care about them. PiN has spent over 20 years working to earn the trust of people experiencing homelessness. The entry point to PiN is the Essential Services program at our ministry center, where people can get food, clothing, laundry and a shower. This helps to show the people we serve that we love them and care about them.

We try hard to introduce them to Jesus through several events. We have a Bible Study every Thursday night, as well as a Church Service on Sunday. We use these events to lead people to wanting to change their lives.

RECOVERY GROUPS

That brings us to recovery groups here at PiN.  PiN has always made recovery groups a core piece to helping people change their lives.  Every Tuesday we have two different opportunities for people to deal with their addictions. Each Tuesday morning, we have a group that we call Life Skills which is built to help people deal with their thought processes. The idea is to help people to deal with the thoughts that lead to using drugs or alcohol in the first place.  The Bible tells us in 2 Corinthians 10:5 to take every thought captive; and we want to help people to understand what thoughts play a role in tearing their lives apart.

Secondly, every Tuesday evening PiN holds a group called Bridges over Barriers that focuses on how people deal with issues in their lives in a healthy way. Barriers are part of everyone’s lives; but to live a fruitful life, everyone needs to learn how to navigate those barriers. These groups are the cornerstone to helping people begin and continue to deal with their addictions.

To transform their life, one has to deal with the root causes which sit below the surface. These root causes are often things that happened a long time ago and usually come from trauma. The importance of counseling is to help people to deal with this trauma. The reason that Counseling goes hand-in-hand with Recovery Groups is because a person needs to deal with the addiction first before he or she can really have hope to deal with the trauma in a positive way.
